Pastor’s Update — July 18, 2026

It was either 1985 or 1986 when the first Air Jordan basketball shoes were introduced. I was no UNC basketball fan by any stretch of the imagination. However, I did go to a high school that loved its basketball and everyone knew who Michael Jordan was and his entry into the NBA and the Chicago Bulls. Those white, red, and black Jordan’s were the envy of everyone. I remember the first guy on our team to have a pair and slowly one by one most of the guys had Jordan’s. Those white, red, and black shoes looked great with our green and gold uniforms. 🥴.

I never owned a pair. Back then a pair of Jordans were $150. A lot of money in the late 80’s. I didn’t pay but $300 for my first car! I was truly jealous of Kevin, Ken, Michael, and Sammy. I thought I would never recover and my life would be ruined. Fast forward to just a few days ago and I was looking for a new pair of sneakers. I saw a pair of Jordans for $110. I remembered how those things caused me such despair and envy. I could now by a pair but it no longer mattered.

Let me remind you this morning that there are plenty of things in this world that are shiny, attractive, and distracting. You can spend your money and time chasing things that don’t really matter. It can be jobs, houses, cars, trucks, boats, sports, hobbies, or just a pair of shoes but it is all temporary. There is nothing wrong with a pair of Jordans. There is nothing wrong with houses, cars, trucks, boats, sports, or hobbies either unless they become your hearts desire. A desire so strong it becomes sin.

Where your treasure is there will your heart be also. – Jesus

Only one life will soon be passed. Only what’s done for Christ will last.
