There’s something uniquely amazing about VBS. Yesterday I had a regular dentist checkup and the hygienist was asking what I was going to to the rest of the day. I told here we were having our VBS planning meeting. We shared stories about VBS both good and bad. At the end I told her it’s the most exhausting but blessed week of the year!
The amazing decorations, the laughter echoing through the halls, the wide-eyed wonder on little faces as they hear Bible stories for the first time—it’s more than just a busy week. It’s Kingdom work wrapped in songs, crafts, and games.
When you volunteer in VBS, you’re not just leading a lesson or wiping sticky hands. You’re planting seeds of faith that may bloom for eternity. You get to watch shy children open up, see energetic ones channel their energy into worship, and witness the simple, powerful faith that Jesus said we should all have. The exhaustion you feel at the end of the week is the good kind—the kind that comes from pouring yourself out for something that truly matters.
Even the messy, chaotic moments carry blessings. A spilled snack, a surprise hug from a little one, or a spontaneous “Jesus loves me” from a child reminds us that God is moving in the middle of the ordinary. Serving in VBS isn’t glamorous, but it is deeply fulfilling. It’s a chance to love like Jesus loved—patiently, joyfully, and with open arms.
