Psalm 34:11-14
Come, O children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
What man is there who desires life
and loves many days, that he may see good?
Keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from speaking deceit.
Turn away from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.
David, having tasted the Lord’s deliverance, now turns to teach the next generation the one thing that makes life truly good: the fear of the Lord. This is not a cringing terror, but a reverent awe that shapes every word and choice. It is the beginning of wisdom and the path to the life God intends.
Notice the practical test he gives. The person who wants long and good days must guard two things: the tongue and the direction of the feet. A lying tongue and a life that drifts toward evil will rob us of the very peace and goodness we desire. The fear of the Lord is not abstract; it shows up in what we say and what we choose.
So the call is clear: turn away from what is wrong, do what is right, and actively pursue peace rather than merely hoping for it. This is not self-help. It is the fruit of a heart that has learned to take God seriously. When we fear Him, we find the strength to control our tongues and walk in the right direction.
