Last night Susan and I were invited to go on a night hike to look for blue ghost fireflies. We met up with our guide and were reminded of hiking in the near dark, the danger of falling, and above all not to turn on a regular flashlight and ruin our night vision. We began the hike just as the sun was setting on a steep narrow trail. After a while we stopped and waited. Surrounded by thick woods and laurel. If it were light we couldn’t have seen 10 feet in any direction. It gets darker and darker. The guide says just be patient. We waited and waited. He promised it would be magical but my knees and feet were not happy on the steep slope. All of a sudden there was one tiny blue light. Then another and another until finally the woods were a glow. It was one of the most amazing things in nature I had ever witnessed. Blue ghost fireflies don’t blink like their cousins, the common yellow/green fireflies. They have a constant glow of pure blue/white light. Scientists don’t really understand how these things generate constant light at such an efficient rate explained our guide. He stated there are 13 varieties in our Southern Appalachian Mountains but yet very little is known about them and they have never reproduced in captivity.
All the while I was thinking about our great God and the diversity of His amazing creation. Seeing the forest floor come alive with those little things brought wonder and amazement but more than that they brought glory to their creator. Something found only in these southern mountains and God just included into His creation just for His Glory.
If He did that on some southern mountain hillside that many people will never see how much of a greater plan do you think He has for you and me. You are not insignificant. You are not forgotten. You whew created for His glory and His purpose. Why not just shine for Him right were you are and bring glory to God in heaven in these little southern mountains we call home!
