“For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” Matthew 5:45
Common grace is God’s goodness poured out on all humanity, regardless of whether people acknowledge Him or not. It is different from saving grace (the forgiveness and eternal life given to those who trust in Christ). Common grace doesn’t save the soul, but it restrains evil, upholds the order of creation, and gives every person—believer and unbeliever alike—countless opportunities to experience God’s kindness.
Think about it:
• The farmer who mocks God still benefits from rain and fertile soil.
• The artist who denies God’s existence is still given creativity and the capacity to enjoy color and music.
• The atheist doctor can still perform life-saving surgeries because God sustains human intellect and the laws of biology.
As James 1:17 reminds us, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.” God’s common grace reveals His character—He is generous, patient, and compassionate. It also points forward to the greater grace found in Jesus. Every blessing in this life is meant to lead us to repentance and relationship with Jesus.
