Don Henley sang about “Dirty Laundry” back in 1982. Here are a few of the lyrics.
We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who
comes on at five
She can tell you ’bout the plane crash with a gleam
in her eye
It’s interesting when people die-
Give us dirty laundry
Can we film the operation?
Is the head dead yet?
You know, the boys in the newsroom got a
running bet
Get the widow on the set!
We need dirty laundry
Dirty little secrets
Dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody’s pie
We love to cut you down to size
We love dirty laundry
We can do “The Innuendo”
We can dance and sing
When it’s said and done we haven’t told you a thing
We all know that trash is King
Give us dirty laundry!
Well before the internet way back in 1982 He wrote and sang about our addiction to tragedy. Today you can look inside people’s lives, inside their home, you can genuinely watch anything from anywhere at anytime. Just this weekend there was a death just before college football game. You could see the man tragically fall and die. There was a priest who died during the service as a giant cross behind him fell and killed the man. Violence in the streets, sexual content of all kinds, military conflict all available all the time.
Voyerism is term thought not many years ago as someone standing creepily in the shadows watching. Today it’s common. We just access it on our phones.
The bottom line is we are becoming calloused to sex, violence and death. Sin is becoming normal. Nothing shocks us anymore.
Todayi want to remind you to be careful. Guard your eyes and your heart.
The writer of Psalms reminds us.
Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways. – Psalm 119:37
Turn of the tablet and the TV. Touch some grass, feel the sunshine, see the colors of fall, enjoy God’s creation.
