Last night in our Wednesday night time together we covered many topics. It was more of a question and answer session instead of a true Bible study of Genesis 29 which was the original plan.
One of the topics we covered was the interceding work of the Holy Spirit on our during prayer.
Most of us have been or will be faced with life issues so overwhelming we do not even have the words to pray. I’ve been there. Have you? Those times when all I can muster is the name Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. The burden is to great, the pain is unbearable, or the stress is genuinely squeezing the life from your chest.
The writer of Romans reminds us in chapter 8 and verse 26, “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”
The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead resides within the believer. He doesn’t stand apart, waiting for us to perfect our prayers. Instead, He assists us in our weaknesses. The word conveys the idea of coming alongside and taking hold of the other end of the burden. When we’re unable to lift the prayer, He lifts it with us.
More than that, He intercedes. He doesn’t just prompt us to speak better; He prays—with groanings so profound that words fail to capture their depth. These groanings are not confusion; they are communion. The Spirit takes burden, the pain, and the stress of our heart and presents it before the Father. What we cannot put into words, He represents perfectly.
So when the mountain is steep and the words fail, do not despise the silence. The Spirit is not silent. He is groaning on your behalf. Rest there until the words come again.
